Culture and EducationDuring the first few days in Reykjavík you will participate in a cultural and educational program. You will attend various presentations on topics such as: genealogy, history, economy, language, literature, geology, feminism, and genetics. The intent is to broaden your perspective of Icelanders and provide you with a more in depth understanding of Icelandic culture, society, and heritage.
You will also visit the Alþingi (the Icelandic Parliament), museums and do shorter tours. If their schedule permits, you will meet the President of Iceland. Other highlights include: A reception for you and your relatives, hosted by the Snorri Foundation; participation in the Reykjavík Marathon (3km walk/run); and take part in the famous Culture Night (Menningarnótt). |
GenealogyWhen completing your application form you are asked to include your family tree as precisely as possible. The Program Manager will contact relatives for you before arrival in Iceland. If you are planning to travel extra before or after the program dates, it is also possible to put you in contact with relatives in areas you are travelling to if desired.
You will receive an information package showing you how you are related to historical persons, famous Icelanders, your fellow Snorris and more. During the cultural and educational part of the program you will also attend a presentation on genealogy. Genealogical information is provided by Íslendingabók and Icelandic Roots (Read about the Book of Icelanders here). |

What participants have said...
"As a participant in Snorri Plus I can say it fulfilled a life-long dream of mine as a genealogist for over 50 years to walk on the land where some of my ancestors lived. A special part of the program was getting in touch with Icelandic cousins who shared the same heritage I do. It was like a giant family reunion in Reykjavik and in the Westman Islands. I learned so much of the history and culture of my ancestors plus touring and walking in the diverse landscape helped me to appreciate the land of fire and ice. Meeting and visiting with the President of Iceland was a special treat. I would recommend anyone interested in Iceland to check out Snorri Plus - it's well worth the time and money. Traveling alone from the United States to Iceland as a 71 year old, I became part of another family at Snorri Plus as our small group of participants bonded after spending two weeks together in classes, touring and partying.
It was so fun, now I have over 2000 photos of this beautiful land to share with my family here. Thanks for a memorable experience."
