Snorri Plus Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is always a good idea when traveling, but especially when traveling internationally. Most insurance providers, American Medicare and Canadian Health insurance, do not cover medical care outside of the insured individual’s home country. If you have questions about your coverage outside your home country, please contact your health insurance provider. Iceland has an excellent national healthcare system, but travelers must be prepared to pay for their own healthcare costs, in the unlikely event that they need to seek care.
The Snorri Plus program strongly recommends that you have travel insurance for the duration of your travels with the program. In most cases, the sooner you obtain your coverage, the less expensive it will be, and pre-existing conditions may be covered; therefore, as soon as you decide to put down a deposit on a Snorri Plus trip, you should purchase your travel insurance. Rates and availability of insurance coverage vary by state/province, so be sure that the company you select is acceptable for your residency. If you wait until the last minute, you may have to pay higher rates, face more coverage limitations, or simply be unable to obtain travel insurance. In addition to medical care coverage, you may wish to consider dental; trip interruption; emergency evacuation (repatriation); trip cancellation; trip delay; lost, stolen, delayed or damaged luggage; and emergency assistance, to name a few. All participants should evaluate their own health and finances when exploring travel insurance.
Former participants have told us in some cases that their credit cards supply sufficient coverage when used to pay the program fee. You will need to verify that yourself. Other former participants have mentioned coverage from their individual or family travel insurance plan or a specialized travel insurance plan. Please be sure you have a copy of your insurance information to carry with you for your time in Iceland. The ability to access a digital copy is also a good idea.
There are many different travel insurance companies; just be sure that whatever company you choose offers plans available to citizens of your state or province for traveling in Iceland for the entire duration of your trip. Policies may be purchased for a single trip or, in some cases, on an annual basis. While the Snorri Plus program does not endorse any particular company, below are some sample travel insurance companies used by previous participants. Insurance brokers are also available to help guide you through your selection and purchase.
