Soffía Ásgeirs Óskarsdóttir
Acting Chair since November 2023
Board member representing INL-Iceland since 2019
Soffía was born in Reykjavík and raised in Seltjarnarnes, where she lived until she was 19. She attended Kvennaskólinn í Reykjavík and later VIA University College in Denmark, studying pedagogy and child development. Although Soffía’s primary occupation has been raising her six children, she has also worked at preschools and a care center for neglected youth. She currently works for child protective services in Seltjarnarnes.
Soffía spent three years in Winnipeg working at the Icelandic Consul General’s Office. Shortly after she returned to Iceland, she received a call from former Consul General Svavar Gestsson, who convinced her that she should get involved with the Icelandic National League of Iceland (INL-Iceland). After having lived in Canada, Soffía says she was well acquainted with the so-called Western Icelandic community and had developed an interest in it and all the good people involved in it. She joined INL-Iceland and is now on its board of directors.
Through her work with INL-Iceland, Soffía became aware of the Snorri Foundation and the Snorri Programs. She says she was quick to accept when asked to join the board of the Foundation, as she believes it is critical that these programs continue. Soffía has hosted several Snorris on return visits to Iceland, as well as two Icelandic girls from Snorri West who were traveling with a couple other people in Winnipeg and Gimli. She says getting to know these wonderful young people has been a lot of fun.
Soffía is married to Sigurjón Jónsson. They live in the Reykjavík area and have six children and three grandchildren.
