  • The Snorris were in Reykjavík for 2 weeks from June 8 - 21. There was not much time for blogging then but for the next 2 weeks you will find regular stories from Snorris who are now spending time with family across Iceland.
  • The group is very responsible and fun too! It can't get much better. Enjoy the first story from Madeline Pekary - Ottawa, Ontario

,,It’s been 53 days since I learned I have family living in Iceland, and 7 days since I arrived here in Vopnafjörður to stay with my fourth cousin, Baldur, and his family. Since arriving, my family has made me feel right at home while simultaneously exposing me to Icelandic culture.

To give me the full Icelandic experience here, my family has fed me slátur, mysa, lýsi, and rotten shark! We’ve visited the local geothermal swimming pool twice, as well as gone swimming at the harbour with my younger cousins (MUCH colder). I’ve also gone riding on Icelandic horses twice!

But the most interesting thing we’ve done so far (in my opinion) was visiting the Bustarfell Museum. It preserves the history of a farm that was used by the same family for over 500 years! The museum showed me what life was like when my ancestors left Iceland for North America, as well as how their ancestors lived. Of course, the cute baby animals living there only helped improve my impression of the museum. One particular baby goat managed to escape its pen and start eating the roof of the house! My cousin Baldur had to go retrieve him (pictured).

This week, I’ve been working at the grocery store stocking shelves and meeting the locals. Next week, I will be working as an assistant to an artist preparing for Vopnaskak, the traditional local festival with live music and a variety of events. I can’t wait for the festival to begin on Friday!"
