Packing Tips for Snorri West

If you’re accepted to one of our programs, you’ll receive a detailed packing list a month or two before departure. But if you’re the type who likes to plan ahead, here are a few general packing tips to help you get started, plus some insights from former participants.

Pack light...

Our itinerary involves relocating often, about every couple of days, so that means a lot of living out of your suitcase. Regardless of airline baggage rules, we strongly encourage you to limit yourself to one checked suitcase and one carry-on. Also, remember to leave some extra space in your luggage if you plan to buy souvenirs for yourself or your family and friends.

... but pack smart!

Packing for a summer trip to North America is not like packing for a summer trip in Iceland. The local conditions may be quite different than what you’re used to. Make sure you carefully read all the information we provide, and feel free to do your own research as well.

Packing smart means...

1. Being prepared for North America's summer weather
Much of North America tends to be quite hot and often humid by Icelandic standards, though sometimes the early mornings or evenings may be cool.
  • Bring a lightweight raincoat to help keep you dry during the infrequent rain showers. We suggest waterproof and windproof.
  • Comfortable shoes that have been broken in are a must. We’ll do a lot of walking in the city as well as some hiking. Hiking boots are not strictly necessary; a good pair of water-resistant walking shoes with good traction should suffice.
Dress in layers. As in Iceland, North Americans frequently remark “If you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes!” As with any cliché, there’s a kernel of truth to it. Summer weather in North America can be extremely variable, though likely much warmer than most Icelanders are prepared for, and can range from bright sunshine with a light breeze to storms bringing driving rain and heavy winds. The day may begin cool but heat up significantly by lunchtime. Air conditioning is common and public spaces are often kept too cool, making long-sleeves feel good.
2. Packing for the itinerary
  • We’ll be on the go a LOT, so that means you’ll want a good-quality backpack or cross-body bag and some comfy walking shoes (don’t buy a new pair the day before you leave or you might be hobbling around with blisters the first week!)
  • Don’t forget your swimsuit. Swimming pools are not as common as in Iceland, but lakes, rivers, and the ocean bring welcome relief from hot, sticky summer weather.
3. Being ready for that summer sun
  • Go ahead and pack your sunglasses and sunscreen - while the sun doesn’t shine as long each day as in Iceland, it’s stronger and brighter, and you can very easily get sunburned, especially if you’re wearing shorts and a tank top! Lip balm may be helpful to protect your lips, and don't forget to cover your ears and neck!
  • We suggest a sun hat of any kind to shade you as well as protect your scalp from sunburn.
Here are a few extra tips to help you fit in with the locals:
  • Though not provided by glaciers, but rather aquifers, rivers, and lakes, North American tap water is generally safe and readily available from public drinking fountains. Whereas in Iceland the hot water often has a slight sulfur odor, in North America you may notice the water has a slight chlorine odor.
  • Pack one dressy outfit. There’s no need to go overboard, but you should bring one nicer outfit for special occasions that may present themselves.

Tips from former participants:

“I am glad that I brought enough sweet little gifts to give to my lovely hosts and relatives that I met!”
