Get to Know
Icelandic Society After the first two weeks in Reykjavík you will stay with an Icelandic family for three weeks. Efforts will be made to place each participant with relatives who live in the geographical area where each individual´s ancestors emigrated from. This is not always possible, but over 90% of previous participants have stayed with their relatives for the socalled family and work period (volunteering). During this time you will participate in everyday family life and take on a summer job equivalent to the summer jobs young Icelanders usually have during the summer months. You will be required to work just as much as the young Icelanders and you will receive an allowance, not a salary. The Snorri Program will choose both the family and the job for each participant. Therefore, you should be prepared to do any kind of work. Among previous volunteer jobs of Snorri participants are: Hotel work, farm work (horse, chicken, sheep, cattle, etc.), slaughterhouse, fish freezing plant, day care for children, tourist information and industry, ferry service, hospital work, grocery store, bookstore, swimming pool, tree planting, construction, greenhouse, whale watching, horse rental, senior citizens´ homes, museums and much more. Landsbanki bank is offering some of the participants positions with the bank in some of the smaller branches outside the capital. We will try our best to accommodate special needs and/or wishes. Please keep in mind that due to language limitations (i.e. insufficient knowledge of the Icelandic language) and the fact that the time period is not very long, it could be difficult to get a job related to your special interests or education. No matter what kind of work you will be doing you will have an experience of a lifetime!
